Chris and I are trying to become adoptive parents. We are working with the county. It has been a very long and frustrating process. We received word two weeks ago that we had been approved. Last Friday we received a letter confirming that we have been approved. We are both very happy. Now we wait for child.
This weekend we worked on the back yard. For a couple weeks we have been talking about planting some vegetables again this year. In the past the dogs have dug in the beds, uprooting plants and seeds. In past years we have used wire fence to keep them out. It works, but it does not look all that good. This year we took out some of the wire fence a replaced it with redwood latice. We used two feet by eight foot panels. We also used pressure treated 2 x 4's. We will probably put up more fence, but we got a nice start on it this weekend. We planted corn, zucchini, yellow squash and cucumber. Chris found some potatoes from some plants that we planted a couple years ago, when she we turning a bed. We intend to replant them in a whiskey barrel. We are also going to plan some mixed lettuce seeds.
In addition to the vegetables, we have some fruit in the yard. There was an apple tree in the back yard when I bought the house. We pruned it a bit this weekend. It's covered in flowers and there are even a couple flowers that have turned into fruit. We planted a blackberry and fig a few years back. Both plants are starting to display buds that are turning into new leavess. A neighbor that lives behind our yard has a white grape. The last couple of years the grape has grown into our yard. Last year we got about 20 bunches of grapes. This year the neighbor cut the vine that had climbed over the fence. The vine appears to have taken root in a bed on our side of the wall. We trimmed it back and tied the branches to a metal stake. We are hoping that the grape continues to grow bare fruit.
We are hoping to get some nice produce this year. There is something really rewarding about picking fruit and vegetables out of the garden and serving them for dinner. It is a bit of work, but the flavors are worth it. Chris makes some very tasty deserts with the fruit. Apple pie, apple crisp, ice cream with fresh blackberries, etc. I addition to the vegetables, Chris planted a couple flowers while we were working in the back yard. She also planted some basil in our herb garden.
